I've realized the same, and have honestly started to see it their way. I get much less of a kick from laboring over a personal website (though I still maintain mine as a hand-coded digital garden). I use Twitter and Instagram heavily.
If we want the indie web to proliferate, I think the technical winning aspects would be to make it social, so people can seamlessly “hang out” on any website, and making choosing a domain name as easy as picking a username. But it won't ever sell to the public if it's called the “indie web”. Instead, it'll grow if it includes a new media format (like Tiktok did) or interesting new (probably niche) network of people.
@Ivan My impression is also many non tech savvy adults don't want to fiddle with websites and are fine with socials.
oh yes, young generations do not care about having a personal website.
They prefer TikTok, Instagram and so on...
