If there's one gripe I have about Linux, it's this. I've had the same thing happen, where I apply updates through the distro's own update manager and it completely breaks things. So I've learned to backup important files often and be ready at any time to do a fresh install. I've tried many distros but LMDE 6 is currently my daily driver.

I learned this the hard way but I won't be taken off guard again.

precisely why I keep a USB with the latest release of Debian on-hand at all times. I've had times where I've been desperate to get an OS onto a flash drive due to me being a one-PC owner type of a guy. Plus, downloading an OS is generally a long process when I am on tethering as opposed to Wifi (which is rare, but there are times when I can only tether).

Glad you are liking Mint 22. My first experience with Linux was Mint Cinnamon on a live USB before I decided to do a full install over Windows in 2015.
